Mechanical Shark (single)

The Good Minus

Mechanical Shark is the first single from the upcoming debut album by The Good Minus. It will be launched at The Retreat Hotel, Brunswick on Friday July 5th.

The Good Minus are an all-singing, instrument-swapping power trio. Their songs feature intricate three-part vocal harmonies with a style described as Grizzly Bear reimagining the songs of Elbow.

Matt Welch, David Kean and Stu Hazelman blend wildly different influences to create multi-layered arrangements, with obscure yet groove-laden time signatures.

"(The Good Minus) have succeeded in creating a perfect indie song.”
- We Love That Sound

“A gorgeous piece with faultless production and a great sonic mix of musicians… a stunning piece of work.” - Ultraviolet

"Lush harmonies…. Johnny Greenwood/Radiohead-esque lead guitar parts.”
- Divide and Conquer Music

LYRICS:
Music will come in last
like Christmas, but in reverse
and this mechanical shark
he has no regard for the art

At the meeting I wait
the faculty race
standardised test
get in your place
a mean and a mode
what you value the most
are data and rank
pre and post

Chorus

The hierarchy's set
this is your stream
are you academic?
which side of your brain?
what's your result?
we'll test you again
but outside these walls
it won't matter to them

Music will come in last
like Christmas, but in reverse
and this mechanical shark
he has no regard for the art.

Laughing Full Steam

The Good Minus

The Good Minus are a three-piece art pop outfit from Melbourne. They are currently recording a full album of hits that will be released early 2019.

As if Grizzly Bear were covering the songs of Television, The Good Minus bring you their inimitable style of angular prog-pop. Matt Welch, David Kean and Stu Hazelman blend wildly different influences to create intricate arrangements, with three-part vocal harmonies and obscure, groove-laden time signatures.

The band members blend widely different influences to create intricate arrangements, featuring three-part vocal harmonies and obscure yet groove-heavy time signatures. These three instrument-swapping singers have each garnered over a decade of experience with artists such as The Hazelman Brothers, Cavanagh & Argus, and Fly South.

We're launching the first track from our upcoming album at The Retreat on the 5th of July with Brian Campeau and Loni Rae Thomson joining us on the night. It's a free gig in the main room, 8pm start.

We're also filming a music video for the single in June at a secret location.

May 2019

Exciting news. Our album has been mixed and mastered and we're beginning to look at booking in a launch date for later this year. David spent many hours editing and mixing our tracks but we were also honoured to have some tracks mixed by Greg J Walker (Machine Translations) and Rohan Sforcina (Head Gap Studios). We got the album mastered by the amazing Alan Douches of West West Side Music (NY). Stay tuned for a launch date and the songs!

October/November- gigs and recording

We had a great gig at The Stringybark Festival on the weekend (21st of October) and are looking forward to our two last shows for the year.  Sunday the 28th of October at the Post Office Hotel, Coburg 4pm and Sunday the 25th of November at The Retreat Hotel, Brunswick 8pm.  Both shows are free and we are looking forward to playing with some great support acts at both shows.

In December we've organised to go into the studio and record 7 new tracks to finish our album.  Exciting! :)

July 2018

We've been working on a new song that Dave wrote called Shadow Lover.  We'll be premiering it at our next show on July the 19th at The Pinnacle.

You can hear a sample of us practising it on our Music page.

We're also excited to be playing with David Cosma in July and Canary in October.

The Single, "Wonderful"

"Wonderful" was launched on June the 14th at The Old Bar Melbourne with support sets from J. Walker (Machine Translations) and Chris Pickering Experiment.

“Post-rock or math rock…. you'll gather within a few seconds that these are intricate arrangements that suggest a cerebral mind behind them… folky voices emerged and did nothing to knock the gracious momentum off its stride. A strong live presence going by this showing, a real band in the throes of creation.”
